The 6th International Guest Lecture takes place on 13th March

On Thursday, the 13th March, 2014, the International Postgraduate Program, College of Religious Studies, Mahidol University had the privilege to invite Prof. Thomas Borchert from the University of Vermont, USA to give a guest lecture on the topic of “Buddhism and Nationalism in Asia” as part of the subject CRRS 573 Dynamics of Inter-Religious Encounters at Room 206, College of Religious Studies, Mahidol University.

In this lecture, the relationship of Buddhism and nationalism, within an eye to the ways that they constitute one another was examined. In addition to discussing what nationalism is and the role of religion within nationalism more broadly, another two cases were also examined: Buddhist support for the war effort in China and Japan during the Second World War, and also the experiences of Dai monks from Sipsongpanna in Thailand.
